Thinking about the game and how much the female emcee’s presence has been under the underground, I can only think about the best to ever do it…L Boogie. I see that Lauryn Hill will be performing at “Rock the Bells” this year. All I can do is shake my head.
I want to be hopeful, but it’s hard at times. Lauryn Hill was the best female emcee I’d seen. No disrespect to ladies doing they thing back then (or now), but she was a force. She could sing just as well as she could spit.
Her debut album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, was a masterpiece. That album took her career to the mountain top. Then, somehow, she fell over the edge. We seen huge, instantaneous success get the best of celebrities but I thought Lauryn was different.
Following her debut, Lauryn’s music took a left turn…waaaay left. Her music became less about love/relationships and more about spiritual matters. When I look at her and the way she dresses, I’m a little unsure of which GOD it is she prays to. The Wizard of OZ?
On the music side, we are reminded everyday about how no one has filled her shoes. Sure there are a lot of females out there doing they thing, but none with the talent and soul of L Boogie.
I guess it’d be different if she chose not to do music at all. She’s just making wack music now. I know there are a lot of people out there (like me), that wishes she would toss us a bone.
Imagine a Kanye produced album, a track with Jay Electronica, a duet with Maxwell, shit anything! A boy can dream. If you’re gonna be out there when she performs, let her know how much we appreciate what she was able to bring to the game…and we need her (and other emcees like her) to rise up.
Oh…and stop dressing like Papa Shango…that’s not a good look.
